ASI is the way out

ASI is the way out

Future Talk #6 — ASI is the way out

One mind, one lifetime is not enough

The popular story about advanced AI is a harm story. Superintelligence slips the leash. We lose control. Something smarter than us will not stay on our side.

I do not think that is the bind we are actually in.

The bind is simpler. Knowledge should not be trapped in one mind, or used up in one lifetime. What we learn should outlive the person who learned it, and get better after they are gone. Books, schools, and institutions already try this. They keep failing at the hard parts because a life is short and a head is small.

AGI is the on-ramp. ASI is the way out — a way to keep knowledge alive, and to grow it, past one person and one life.

This sits in the Future Talk series, after Thoughts on Generative AI, Age of the Agents, Jobs to be done, Human Machine Interface, and Agent harnesses. Those posts got us to agents, work, interfaces, and the loop around a model. This one is why human-level is not the end.

I have heard the extinction case, and the fear that a mind we cannot inspect will not share our ends. Those are not silly. They are also not this essay. The larger risk is staying as we are: every generation starting over, every expert taking a lifetime into the grave. Staying here wastes lives too.

Knowledge that outlives us

This is not an argument that humans are stupid. We are good at caring, and at deciding what kind of world we want. That is not the same as holding everything we have ever learned — and making it better — inside one head, for eighty years, and then stopping.

A career is short. A government is slower than the problem it governs. We already know large parts of what to do in medicine and energy. We still cannot carry that knowing far enough, or long enough, to finish. The knowing dies with us. The next person climbs the same hill.

I want the opposite. Preserve what we know. Enhance it. Let it grow past one mind and one lifetime.

AGI is the waypoint

In Age of the Agents I wrote that swarms of agents would arrive before AGI. In Agent harnesses I wrote that the interesting layer is now the loop around the model: tools, rules, a chance to say no. I still believe both. I do not believe a human-level machine is the destination.

AGI would be a coworker at our scale: the jobs a strong person can do, faster, cheaper, in more places. That would change the world. It is not enough. Extra excellent scientists still die, still forget, still leak most of a life’s work on the way to the next person.

AGI gives us more people-shaped minds. ASI is how knowledge stops being people-shaped — kept, shared, and grown without waiting for the next child to repeat the climb.

In Human Machine Interface I said we were becoming the bottleneck: too slow at the keyboard and in speech. Same thought, one level up. The bottleneck is not only how we talk to machines. It is that knowledge itself is stuck in us.

What ASI is for

By ASI I do not mean a god or a movie. I mean knowing and doing beyond any one person, or any team of people.

Science. Medicine is partial maps: papers, trials, hunches in one doctor’s head. Cures move at the speed of careers. A mind that can keep the map and improve it will not automatically make us kind. It will change what we can find while people are still alive to need it.

Energy. In Jobs to be done I wrote about less disease, less poverty, better energy, abundance. Those are destinations. This post is the vehicle. We already know the outlines of cleaner power. We keep almost-building them. Knowledge that can stay with the problem, year after year, is how outlines become a grid.

Coordination. We often know the answer and still fail to stay with it. That is enough said.

Human-level copies of us will not get us there. They will be as mortal, and as forgetful, as we are.

We still harness it

None of this says we take our hands off the wheel. What counts as a good life is still ours. Keeping and growing knowledge can go further than we can. That is the same shape as Agent harnesses: a more capable mind with no rules and no checks is not a future. It is a leak.

We have to build the thing that can hold what we know, and we have to wrap it. The problems will not shrink to fit a single life.

Close

I am not asking anyone to stop being careful. I am asking us to stop treating one mind, one lifetime as the safe default. AGI will feel like the news. ASI is whether knowledge has to die with us.

The popular harm story is about a mind we cannot control. Mine is simpler: what we know should outlive us, and it should grow.
